Ladies, we just booked a trip to Europe!! We fly first to Amsterdam, then a quick stopover in Bruges, then Paris then London! I’m so excited! It’s always been on my bucket list – I’m 32 years old and can you believe I’ve never been to Europe?! It’s about d**n time!
Obviously I started thinking about what I was going to wear on the trip because who wants to show up in Paris looking like a tourist? We all secretly want to blend in and pretend we’re this effortlessly chic Parisian girl. Oh you mean this vintage coat and purse? Oh I found it at the back of my closet in my bohemian chic rustic walk-up apartment. This wavy bedhead hair? Oh honey, I woke up like this. I never use soap and only use micellar water on my face. I don’t wear makeup other than mascara and lipstick. You get the picture.
Anyways, I started browsing all my usual shopping tabs and websites making a list of all the items I was going to buy and bring with me on the trip. And I was basically in shopping heaven until I suddenly came to this sad realization that #1, I’m a mother and whereas before I wouldn’t hesitate blowing insane amounts of money on clothes I am now a responsible adult and have to contribute that money to Georgia’s RSP or college fund or whatever, and #2, I’m the founder of a company that espouses sustainable slow fashion so I’m not really setting a great example by going impulse shopping so I closed my laptop and went to bed very begrudgingly. I also asked Josh for a massage to reward me for good behavior but he was not impressed =(
The next day I thought about how I could elevate my existing fall wardrobe without wasting money buying new clothes. And this is the dilemma that many pregnant mamas go through right: buying clothes you’ll never wear again. When I was pregnant I didn’t buy a single non maternity garment even if it was the most timeless seasonless elegant piece ever because I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to wear it post-pregnancy (whether I would be too big or too small after birth). You all know my story about me buying maternity clothes so I won’t repeat it here. How I elevated my look while pregnant was by investing in non-clothing pieces that I knew I would wear/use season after season. This included shoes, jewellery, bags, scarves, sunglasses, headbands etc.
Also I’m really digging the beautiful 1950s color block and preppy fashion brought alive by Midge from my new favourite TV show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Everything she wears is a fashion moment. She also wears lots of head accessories. So for my upcoming Europe trip I thought that a great way to freshen up my existing style was to bring a variety of headbands and turbans. Having different accessories really changes your look despite wearing the same outfit. I just purchased this floral headband by Namjosh and I already know it’s going to be my fall staple.
Mamas, if you’re desperate to elevate your style (other than renting from us) try investing in an accessory or even schedule a makeover (hair or makeup). I know it’s hard not being able to wear the clothes you normally wear but there are other ways to make you feel like your normal confident beautiful self!
