If our friends and families thought we were crazy to launch Sprout Collection during my pregnancy (the day of my delivery to be precise), they sure must think we’re insane to think we can keep this up with a demanding newborn. Maybe we are, but I’m just so excited and believe so strongly in what we can offer to expecting mothers; something that I wasn’t able to enjoy during my pregnancy. Maternity clothing that works.
In 2017, I married my best friend and thought we would spend the next few years together on our own, enjoying our newly married status and travelling the world together.
As always, life intervened. Joshua and I found out we were expecting our first child in May and I soon realized that I would need a whole new maternity wardrobe to accommodate my growing body (and not just my belly!)
Living in Toronto, I thought I would easily find good quality maternity clothing at an affordable price, but I was so wrong. The big department stores have pulled their maternity lines from their brick and mortar stores. Boutique maternity stores charge exorbitant prices for the beautiful, stylish maternity clothes that I would only wear for a few months. I did buy a few cheap basics, but that wasn’t really enough to get me by, especially as the seasons changed. I’m not a fashionista by any stretch of the imagination, but I prefer well-made clothing that can sustain long-term wear and usage to fast-fashion that falls apart and ends up in landfills.
For the first two months, I was still able to fit into my regular clothes. By month 3, I was buying larger sizes of the usual brands that I liked. The second trimester was more tricky. I started wearing my husband’s clothes and anything that was loose fitting and baggy.
By months 4 and 5, I was desperate. I was tired of hiding my body in oversized knit sweaters all the time (it was the dead of winter by that stage) and I figured I deserved to splurge on a few stylish pieces that I could wear and show off my baby bump in. I bought 3 garments online that day and blew approximately $800 once shipping, tax and duty charges were included.
That was the last time I shopped during my pregnancy.
That was the first time I started thinking of how I could provide alternative, sustainable and high quality maternity options for expecting mothers like me.
And that was how Sprout Collection was born.
Our goal is to give Mamas like you access to high-quality maternity clothing at an affordable price. Maternity fashion doesn’t have to be this black hole, where you hide your body in ill-fitting clothing for a year, just because you’re smart enough not to spend a fortune on clothes you’ll never wear again.
Sprout Collection lets you build your dream maternity closet without hassle or great expense. You’re free to spend your time and energy on what matters most – you and your little Sprout!
I’m so excited to have launched, and we’ve already had the most wonderful feedback from our customers. Thank you for your patience, love and support – we really couldn’t have done it without you.
